WHO WE ARE:
The Western Cape Primary Science Programme (PSP) is a teacher in-service training and support organisation that has been working since 1985 to address the inequalities in education in South Africa.
The PSP is a centre for excellence in primary education and aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning in South African primary schools in the critical fields of Mathematics & Numeracy, Natural Sciences & Environment, Language & Literacy Development and Social Sciences.
WHAT WE DO:
With a core staff of highly skilled and experienced education specialists, PSP projects are implemented in the most disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape, providing comprehensive and ongoing support to primary school teachers as well as developing quality teacher support materials and resources.
Today, the PSP works with around 1000 teachers from more than 120 historically disadvantaged primary schools in the township and rural communities of greater Cape Town across various projects each year, benefiting over 100,000 learners.
Currently, the organisation runs two core programmes, the ‘Innovation Project’ (an annual programme of short courses for individual teachers) and the ‘Cluster Project’ (a two-year cycle of intensive training and classroom support with specific project schools). In addition to these, the PSP also delivers contract work for the Department of Education as well as other fixed-term development projects, such as the ‘Joint Mentorship Project’ (a two-year cycle of mentorship, classroom support and training for first-time teachers).
WHY SUPPORT THE PSP:
The PSP’s main effort is in direct response to the urgent need to improve the quality of teaching and learning in South Africa. Our firm belief that effective and sustained change in education can be achieved through an enlightened and productive teaching force is reflected in our core training and support programmes.
