iThemba Lethu means ‘I have a destiny’. We seek to positively impact the lives of children and young people whose lives are at risk of being negatively affected by the HIV / AIDS.

Our vision is to see these children regain a meaningful destiny by each child:
– recognising the value of their lives
– being part of a secure family

This is achieved through two programmes:

The FAMILY INTEGRATION PROGRAMME facilitates the adoption of babies who have been orphaned or abandoned as a result of HIV / AIDS, into secure and loving families. The programme includes two transition homes that take care of the babies until suitable families can be found. Babies are placed in our care by various welfare departments in and around Durban. We then find a permanent home for each child. The entire process of screening potential families and facilitating the placement is carried out by our social worker – at no cost to the adoptive family. In 2009 alone, 8 babies were adopted and to date, we have facilitated the adoption of 56 babies.

Affiliated to the programme is the iThemba Lethu BREASTMILK BANK which affords breastfeeding moms the opportunity to donate their excess milk. The moms are screened and the milk is pasteurised before being given to the babies at the transition home. As the best form of nutrition, the health and well being of the babies significantly improves.

The second programme is the HIV PREVETION PROGRAMME which is a school-based behavioural change intervention aimed at reducing HIV infection rates amongst pre-adolescent young people in Cato Manor by reducing their risk-taking behaviour in general. The motivation for change has to be the realisation of self-value and destiny. This provides a backdrop against which HIV / AIDS education can then have a positive effect on their lifestyle and behaviour. In 2011 we will continue to work in 7 schools in Cato Manor with 8 grades of learners totally over 1700 young people.

The work with young people is supported by programmes for their care-givers and teachers which aids in maintaining change.
