Help the Rural Child Trust was established in 2006 and is a registered Charitable Trust and NPO. We operate 6 charity shops in the greater Cape Town area. Our shops are entirely dependent on donations received. The proceeds of the HTRC charity shops go towards supporting rural youth centres.
Our Vision: To make a sustainable contribution towards improving the lives of vulnerable rural children.
Our Mission: To support rural development via the funds generated from the Charity Shops and all additional Non-Shop Trade and fundraising efforts.
Although Help the Rural Child’s primary focus is supporting children living in vulnerable rural communities, we are able to reach a wider group of people through our charity shops as we collect unwanted goods and provide communities with quality goods at very low prices. This makes for a win-win situation for all involved.
We Operate;
- 2 bookshops offering a wide range of second hand books: fiction, nonfiction, children’s, educational, specialist and collectables.
- 4 clothing and bric a brac shops offer quality second hand goods at affordable prices.
- Non-Shop Trading initiatives include our schools programme, malls, markets, etc.
HTRC is made possible with our dedicated volunteer base of 40 individuals. We plan to grow and diversify the volunteer programmes on offer. Over and above the voluntary workforce we also employ and train 18 staff members.
We have plans to open two more charity shops this year and therefore will help sustain more rural youth centres. The chosen beneficiary of funds raised by HTRC Charity Shops is the Path Out of Poverty (POP) Rural Youth Centres. POP is a registered NPO founded by the Goedgedacht Trust.
Goedgedacht Trust has over the years refined an integrated-community-development model which is made up of 17 interlocking projects that children and the greater communities can access at any point.
Currently there are 2 POP centres operating in the Swartland area of the Western Cape with a third being built and set to open within the next 6 months. The POP objective is to open 10 centres over the next 5 to 10 years and therefore reaching thousands more vulnerable rural children throughout Southern Africa. HTRC aims to grow the number of charity shops so as to continue supporting these rural youth centres.
