Christian churches provide a powerful channel for the implementation of HIV and Aids strategies. However, church leaders are often uninvolved because they lack a complete and comprehensive view of the pandemic and its drivers.
The need for a Christian HIV and Aids service in South Africa was identified when congregations of various churches started asking for guidance on their involvement in the HIV terrain. As direct result of this request, CABSA (Christian AIDS Bureau for Southern Africa) was founded at the Hugenot College in Wellington in 2001.
The mission of CABSA is: ‘To guide and support Christian communities to understand their calling and become HIV competent, through advocacy, providing information, mobilising and networking.’
CABSA is particularly well known for the Churches, Channels of Hope programme. Through this intensive training programme facilitators are trained to present workshops and information sessions on HIV in their communities, by understanding the complexities of the virus, the epidemic and the Christian response to the epidemic.
