The Underdog Project is an animal assisted therapy project that assists at-risk youth to overcome social and emotional problems through the training of shelter dogs. Using a unique combination of dog training activities and life skills workshops, we engage with, motivate and inspire our learners to reorient their lives and find their feet. And in doing this we also help their shelter dog partners to develop skills that will help them find forever homes.
The Underdog Project provides a safe, stimulating extra-mural activity, as well as hard and soft skills training for school leaners. Positive, force-free dog training techniques ensure the well-being of both dogs and students and builds in them patience, compassion, empathy and responsibility.
Some of our key goals:
– Equip school leavers with the emotional intelligence to cope with life’s ups and downs, and the skills to tackle challenges head on.
– Motivate learners to stay in school, not to turn to violence or substance abuse.
– Instil humane education in the learners and their community, promoting responsible and kind pet ownership.
– Prepare shelter dogs for their new homes and accelerate their adoption.
