The South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP) is an award-winning education non-profit dedicated to serving children and youth in Cape Town’s impoverished townships through academic support, extra-curricular activities and personal development programmes. SAEP helps beneficiaries realise their potential by helping them build academic and life skills, prepare for productive employment, and contribute as leaders to South Africa’s economic and social development.
The majority of SAEP’s work takes place in the community of Philippi, a crime-ridden, poverty-stricken township on the outskirts of Cape Town. Our primary objective is ‘to provide education and to improve the social and economic development of Philippi and neighbouring communities, and to improve living standards and the physical environment’ through education and training, youth skills and career development, and promotion of volunteerism and community service.
Today, nearly 2,000 young people benefit from SAEP’s four major educational programmes.
– Our early childhood development (ECD) programme aims to empower severely under-resourced township preschools to become independent, quality ECD centres. We provide staff empowerment through training and capacity building, infrastructural and nutritional support, and run activities for children at 10 independently-run township crèches.
– Our high school programmes aim to improve numeracy and English literacy; to promote academic achievement in all subjects; and to expand the horizons of, build the confidence of, and empower black township youth. We offer academic tutoring, computer training, and arts and environment enrichment activities at five township high schools.
– Our bridging year programme aims to prepare promising recent high school graduates for success at university and in the job market and help them access tertiary education. We provide intensive academic tutoring, mentorship, leadership training and skills development to 12 to 15 students each year.
– Our tertiary support programme aims to promote retention among black township youth studying at university. We provide financial support when student loans or scholarships do not fully cover their tuition and living costs, as well as psychosocial support and academic and career counselling.
