Focus on iThemba provides quality foster care homes for vulnerable children and a school of excellence for our children and the greater community. Located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Focus on iThemba is an accredited non-profit, public benefit organisation (18a) restoring hope in people’s lives.

A place of Hope exists. In 2003, visionary leader Danie van den Heever, a retired Durban businessman, established a haven for hope near Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal. Realising the need for positive action he drove the process to form an inspirational organisation entitled ‘Focus on iThemba’, the isiZulu word for ‘hope’.

iThemba Homes is a unique yet specialised foster care initiative offering a place of sanctuary to young South Africans. Joseph House, Joshua House, Jacob House and Anna House are the first of 20 cluster foster care homes to be developed. The homes each cater for married parents and up to six children which allows for optimum one-on-one care, with the support of brothers and sisters, siblings have the opportunity to live together in the same home. Each home is headed by loving parents who provide a warm family life rooted by stability and renewal.

Situated on a unique site with breathtaking views of the Valley of 1000 Hills our innovative Foundation Phase school, the iThemba Academy, offers exceptional schooling in small class sizes for girls and boys from Grade 0 to Grade 3. Orphaned and vulnerable children from the broader Valley of 1000 Hills Community, as well as our foster children, are offered fundamental early years education. This independent school, staffed by dedicated educators, aims to ensure that the potential of each child is nurtured. Our teaching body realises the uniqueness of every child and focuses on enhancing and celebrating the individual, thereby inspiring independent thought and creative expression.

The team at Focus on iThemba is deeply concerned about our neighbouring Embo community and the effects that the HIV / AIDS pandemic have cast on them. High levels of unemployment, poverty, disease and the breakdown of the family unit are only a few challenges that children in this community have to endure. Focus on iThemba aims to restore lives by bringing hope and assisting this community through: iThemba Academy scholarships / bursaries; Empowering rural teachers and pupils; an Enterprise Development programme and Donations of Food and Clothing.
