Vuka Energy Savings

Mobile units with language specific trained presenters take Do-It-Yourself energy saving technologies to urban and rural areas demonstrating cost cutting Do-It-Yourself products. Technologies include the Hot-box method of slow cooking as well as the making of long burning Energy Balls as fuel, Solarstove and Rocket Stove.

Need of women to provide food and hot water to families at lowest cost and reduced personal effort in obtaining energy source identified by observing women searching for fuel or getting feedback on high cost of basic fuels used – paraffin, gas or electricity.

Demonstrating the energy savings ideas provides opportunity to discuss safety issues (e.g. working with paraffin) and health issues (e.g. nutrition for sufferers of diabetes, AIDS and TB).

These ‘social’ gatherings create cooking clubs which can become information disseminating conduits.

Feedback from women and men who have attended the demonstrations:
- ‘Eish! It’s magic!’
- ‘I confess that I tried it and it worked.’
- ‘When are you coming next because I want to bring my friends’
- ‘I want to take a Wonderbox back to the Eastern Cape in December’

The communities we have reached so far are using the technologies, especially the ‘Hot Box’ and have come up with innovative ways of using these in businesses as well as homes, creches, soup kitchens, etc. The Red Cross, Child Welfare and Eco-schools in Hermanus are embracing the ideas with great enthusiasm.
