Our mission is to address the unacceptably high shortages of qualified health care staff at rural hospitals as this impacts negatively on service provision to rural communities. We thus identify, train and support rural youth with potential to become the future health care providers in their communities.
Over the past 10 years we have produced 73 health science graduates across 14 different health disciplines, including 23 doctors. Every graduate is required to work at a rural hospital for the same number of years as they received support for.
In 2010, we provided support to 110 youth at University, whom we selected from rural areas mainly in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The pass rate at University over the past 4 years has been above 80% – this can be ascribed to the mentoring support we provide to our students and their commitment to succeed.
