The South African Guide Dogs Association

The South African Guide-Dogs Association train guide dogs for the Blind, providing them with Independence, Mobility and Companionship. SAGA is a fully constituted non-profit organisation and has been in operation in South Africa since 1953.

SAGA train guide dogs for the blind as well as service and social dogs for the physically disabled. These dogs assist with tasks such as switching lights on and off, opening and closing doors and other service related tasks for the disabled. SAGA also trains sighted students through a 2 year SETA accredited national diploma on the skills of daily living and mobility using a white cane. These qualified Orientation and Mobility practitioners return to their communities and train blind people at ground level on the above skills enabling them to become independent and mobile. It is estimated that 1% of our population in South Africa is blind.

It costs a lot of money and time to train these remarkable guide dogs and service / social dogs over an 18 month period and the recipients only pay a nominal R5 plus R100 board and lodging when they receive their new four legged mobility aids!

SAGA is represented nationally with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. We rely on the support of private individuals, corporate and service groups for financial support to sustain the association going forward as we receive no government funding.
