The Dandelion Initiative is a non-profit organization that aims to offer quality psycho-social care and support for children and adolescents with any chronic / terminal illnesses and disabilities. It is operated by dynamic and dedicated staff and volunteers who are experts in psycho-social support and care-giving.

The Dandelion Initiative offers quality psycho-social care that is easily accessible to the community. Our culture is to promote a holistic approach to psycho-social care. We focus on enabling children and adolescents to experience psychological freedom despite the limitations of illness and disability. Through the cultivation of positive, empowered or relaxed attitudes and perceptions, patients learn to reclaim their identities and embrace mental wellbeing.

The Dandelion Initiative’s vision is to improve the psychological and emotional wellbeing of disadvantaged children and teenagers who have experienced emotional and physical trauma, illness and physical disability. The service is mobile and does outreach programs at the Red Cross Hospital and elsewhere.

The founder often does awareness raising and talks on her book and NPO at schools and institutions. The Initiative is unique in that it emerged from Marguerite’s own book and life experience. The Dandelion Initiative was founded in early September 2007 and was born from Marguerite’s autobiography about a child and young woman's struggle with illness and disability, entitled "The Dandelion Diary : the Tricky Art of Walking".

Vision: Psychological counselling and psychosocial support for children and adolescents with serious illness and disability.

Mission: The Dandelion Initiative is a sustainable, credible, non-profit organization caring for children and adolescents with illness and disability living within the Cape Town area.

Core reasons for existence: To provide quality psychological care during chronic or terminal illness and disability.

Company philosophy: The Dandelion Initiative strives to provide quality psycho-social care and psychological counselling. We believe that no one should be in pain, afraid or alone due to serious illness and disability. Our emphasis is on preventing the patient’s identity from being overshadowed by illness or disability; and challenging perceptions around them. Our philosophy has a positive orientation and we focus on enhancing the patient’s personal strengths and capabilities.

The Dandelion Initiative practices business in an eco-conscious way. We reuse, reduce and recycle paper while also valuing an interdependence with nature during psychotherapy. The organisation offers specialised training to staff, volunteers and the community. It encourages staff development by mentoring and coaching them to always improve their skills. Company values are: Quality psychological care, empathy, honesty, compassion, respect, integrity and teamwork.
