Vision: ‘Christianity in Action’. As part of God’s commission of love towards the poor, our vision is to initiate sustainable programmes by unlocking and developing human potential being an effective server in the community.
Mission: Sobambisana Community Development Programme (SCDP), Christianity in Action is dedicated to support and develop the community of Crossroads so as to improve the quality of life. We work with communities providing assistance to the most vulnerable groups, namely children and the aged. The projects were established in 1987 with the aim to reduce poverty and to address the gaps in the community. Services are offered to individuals, to develop skills and increase the capacity of parents, providing information on the development of children.
The overall objectives of the whole programme are aimed at a comprehensive community improvement plan. The individual projects are individually sustainable, interactive and supportive of each other.
Strategic Objectives:
The target geographic area is amongst the most disadvantage communities as identified in the South African Poverty report produced by Statistics SA. Mainly families who migrated to the Western Cape and settle in wood and iron structures in informal settlements and overcrowded backyards inhabit these communities.
The vast majority of the target group can be classified as ultra poor and are households that fall within the lower 20% of the income spectrum in the Western Cape. Indicators for these communities reflect the poor living conditions with communities suffering from what has been termed social poverty or lack of social support networks, as well as material poverty, which further worsens the quality of life. Many of these areas are chronically unsafe.
Specific Goals:
1. Undertake a community consultation and needs assessment in preparation of the strategy before a programme can be implemented.
2. Offers an integrated range of services determined by local needs.
3. Focus mostly on the vulnerable children and families affected by HIV / AIDS, children with disabilities, children at risk of abuse and seniors who do not have adequate access to health and nutrition services.
4. Enhance community capacity in a development awareness programmes for community members to reduce poverty.
5. To work with representative community structures with similar objectives to provide strong governance.
6. To ensure long-term sustainability of the education strategy by mobilizing a range of resources through community stakeholders.
Objectives for the projects:
- Providing care and education, at affordable rates, to pre-school children of the Crossroads area.
- Providing after school care and development of grade 1 to 9 children in a safe and healthy environment at optimum cost.
- To provide stimulation programmes for the mental and physically disabled from disadvantaged families in the Crossroads community.
- Providing senior citizens with care and recreation in a safe environment.
The service rendered by the Sobambisana Community Development Programmers (SCDP) is offered in the community of Crossroads and its surrounding areas.
