image placeholder FOCUS AREA:
Our focus area is gender-based violence and our clients are women and their children who experience domestic and/or sexual violence.

Our vision is the creation of a safe and secure society and a human rights culture, where women and children are empowered and live in a violence-free society.

Our mission, as a human rights-based, non-governmental organisation, is to provide a comprehensive range of services that are accessible and safe to women and children by:
  • 1. Working in partnership with organisations that advocate ending violence against women and children

  • 2. Providing 24-hour emergency shelter, short and medium term residential care, and childcare services.

  • 3. Providing mental health support, legal and economic empowerment services.

  • 4. Conducting research that will inform intervention strategies and best practices in the gender-based violence sector.

Our objectives:
  • 1. The establishment of an integrated and comprehensive one-stop centre for women and children who are survivors of gender-based violence.

  • 2. The establishment of a relevant and effective one-stop centre partnership that provides client-centred services to women and child survivors of violence.

  • 3. The provision of a comprehensive range of services for abused women and children, which is effectively co-ordinated among partner organisations.

  • 4. The establishment, through research, of a best practice intervention model to challenge and end violence against women and children.

  • 5. The provision of effective community outreach work to end violence against women and children through preventative and awareness programmes.

  • 6. The development of an effective networking relationship with other organisations, networks and tertiary institutions that advocate and seek an end to violence against women and children.

There are currently ten partner organisations on site providing counselling services or job skills training to clients in the Saartjie Baartman Shelter or from other communities.

WE NEED:
Funding is always an issue – for improving services (e.g. strengthening the intake counselling service for women who come to the Centre for help), and for organizational and staff development. The Shelter’s needs include furniture and appliances for the new second stage houses that are being built for women who have been through the three-month Shelter programme but who need additional time in a safe environment.
