The SA Federation for Mental Health is a national, non- profit, non- governmental organization aiming to co-ordinate, monitoring and promoting services for persons with Intellectual Disability (Mental Handicap), Psychiatric Disability (Mental Illness) as well as promoting mental health and well-being.
Our vision is to be a dynamic movement, which serves as an effective resource to empower people to attain optimal mental well- being and quality of life, in a just society. We aspire to contribute to a just and fair society through our 4 main programmes:
Capacity Building
Our role as a national organization is to capacitate our constituencies with skills, thereby ensuring the services they deliver are of a high standard.
Social integration
The programme assists with the integration of persons with intellectual or psychiatric disabilities into society. Due to myths, stigmatization, poverty and lack of support systems, society is hesitant accepting persons with intellectual or psychiatric disabilities.
Human Rights
The programme monitors the services rendered to persons with intellectual or psychiatric disabilities, implements appropriate advocacy programmes ensuring that full social integration of persons with intellectual or psychiatric disabilities into society and see the upholding of their constitutional right.
Mental Health Awareness
The programme is about raising awareness about services rendered by the SA Federation for Mental Health. The purpose of creating awareness about the mental well- being is to dispel the myths and stigma attached to these disabilities. The promotion of mental well- being is equally important and the focus is on prevention rather than cure through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and other relevant issues.
Currently, 3 mental health awareness campaigns are held each year. They are:
- Intellectual Disability Awareness during the month of March
- Psychiatric Disability Awareness during the month of July
- Mental Well- being / health promotion and awareness during the month of October, with October 10 being celebrated as World Mental Health Day.
The SA Federation for Mental Health is constituted by 17 mental health societies and numerous member organizations, actively involved in the field of intellectual, psychiatric disability and mental well being. The list of the mental health society in your province can be obtained from the office.
