This Society is 30 years in existence a registered non profit organisation in its 30 years of existence. We engage in therapeutic counselling, education and empowerment programmes that are aimed at the diverse cultural race groups in the Phoenix, Mount Royal, Mt Moriah and Inanda areas.
Whilst our intervention focuses on individual counselling and support, services rendered largely involve statutory intervention (court inquiries) i.e. placing many abandoned and orphaned babies / children in alternate care, foster care and adoption, child abuse and neglect, HIV infected and affected persons, behavioural problems of youth, teenage pregnancies / single parents, poverty and women abuse.
Many of our programmes concentrate on community upliftment, where our teams engage these communities in outreach programmes such as skills development. Our sustainable gardening, bead making, sewing and poultry farming project teaches community members basic skills which impacts on individual and community welfare and promotes an entrepreneurial spirit.
Other programmes centre on HIV / AIDS awareness, advocacy on gender issues, campaigns focussing on protection of children and preservation of families, poverty alleviation (material relief to poor and needy), youth mentorship and leadership programmes through our Children’s Foundation.
Another achievement of this Society was the establishment of the Sahara Shelter in 1994. The Sahara is a 24 hour facility that is a place of safety for abused women and children. The Shelter is also equipped with a nursery to accommodate babies that are orphaned or abandoned. The Sahara affords women and children a safe environment allowing them the opportunity to work through their emotions and reflect on their life. Survivors of abuse are offered individual, group and family counselling as well as afforded opportunities to engage in empowerment and skills development programmes such sewing skills, life skills education, bead making, gardening, etc.
In 2007 this Society launched the Phoenix Children’s Foundation – our philosophy is ‘Children taking care of other children’. The Foundation now boasts over 100 members who encourage dialogue and debate on matters affecting youth. PCF seeks to empower and inspire youth on making informed decisions and encourage a positive lifestyle and way of life. These members are actively involved in all programme hosted by the Society.
