Mohlanatsi Integrated Rural Development Programme is a not for profit that promotes social wellbeing and economic empowerment through providing comprehensive health care services and facilitating the establishment of income generating activities in rural areas of Mopani District in Limpopo province.
Key areas of focus for Mohlanatsi are:
1. Home community based care:
The organisation has 23 care workers operating in 6 villages and nearby farms in BaPhalaborwa Municipality. The care workers visit families on a daily basis and provide comprehensive palliative care and educational services to the needy and the community at large, focusing on the family as a whole. The organisation works directly with the local Department of Health (sub-district coordinators and local clinics).
2. HCT:
The organisation has employed a part time professional nurse and utilises the services of the professional nurses working at the nearby clinic to provide HCT services to members of the community outside the health facilities, which includes road shows, home visits and community awareness. The programme has proven to be a success as most people have tested and we have contributed in the clinics nearby us reaching the targets for HCT as set by Government for 2011.
3. OVC support, including drop in centres:
The organisation is supporting 4 drop in centres with 358 children registered. The services offered in the drop in centres includes Psychosocial support, educational support, HIV education and awareness, access to basic needs, legal requirements (which includes birth certificates and grants) and life orientation.
4. Support groups on People Living with HIV:
The organisation supports 43 support groups in clinics, hospitals and health centres in Phalaborwa and Tzaneen Municipalities. The programme involves HIV education, treatment literacy, nutrition, adherence, stigma, discrimination and disclosure and prevention with positives.
5. Peer Education:
This is a new programme within the organisation which concentrates in empowering young people with knowledge to make informed decisions about their health and lead a healthy lifestyle. The programme has also initiated a youth leadership project which is aimed at equipping young people with leadership skills and facilitating health activities in schools.
