Militia Trust

The Militia Trust was established in in the Eastern Cape in 1999, originally to facilitate the introduction of Military Personnel being retrenched or rationalized from the South African National Defence Force into the broader civil society.

The project provided skills development and training in security, brick making, baking, small business skills and other fields to assist soldiers in integrating into civilian life.

The organization still maintains a strong contact with reserve force members of the South African National Defence Force, which are mostly unemployed and do few duties in the force which is their only form of income.

Our database assists especially in the placement of reserve force members within the security industry.

Between 2000 and 2003 Militia Trust also became involved in:

- Community Policing Projects in the Eastern Cape, Mthatha, Wild Coast and Buffalo City Area. (Volunteer members from communities were trained and placed into volunteer service as an executive arm of the Community Policing Forums).
- Nature Conservation Personnel Training in Banhine, Mozambique.
- Training and consultation with Community Policing Fora in the Gauteng area.

Militia Trust is currently involved in the following projects / operations:

- Providing a support network for ex military and military reserves personnel within the civilian sector. We keep a database of ex military personnel and reserves which employers can tap into.
- We provide training and workshops for CPF’s Community Police Forums. Our experience and knowledge gained over the past 11 years have made us leaders in the field of knowledge on CPF’s. We help CPF’s through their establishment and Operational requirements in support of the South African Police Force.
- Militia is involved with DMPSP (see link on right) in the provision of Humanitarian Support Coordination and relief during times of crisis or displacement.
- The development of a Militia Cadet Program, specifically targeting youth from the ages of 12 to 19. The cadet program aims to provide children with goals, discipline and a sense of civic duty. It also aims to prepare those children wishing to follow a military career in the future with a sound foundation of military functioning and structure. The program will follow many of the principles of the Boy Scouts and Girl guides with a definite military flavour for adventure and discipline.
- Our latest project, Militia and DMPSP have partnered up with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), HANSA (Humanitarian Assistance Network of South Africa), Mtwakazi Arts and Culture in the provision of workshops to The South African Police Force, Community Police Fora and other relevant stakeholders in communities on Cost Of Violence, Conflict resolution, Monitoring and Reporting and Pre Displacement Assessment Tools and Methodologies. This project has been initiated by the UNHCR to combat displacement caused by Xenophobic Violence in South Africa.
