Mamelani derives its name from the isiXhosa word for ‘listen up’ as it is only through listening to the real needs of a community that proper change can be affected. Registered in 2003, Mamelani has grown into a respected community development organization. Mamelani facilitates programs that assist people in taking action to improve their lives. Mamelani believes in developing communities by developing people. Mamelani works from the inside out, rather than from the outside in. In this way our programs are always in line with the real felt needs of the communities we work with.
Vision: A healthy, fair and equal society where people are able to reach their full potential.
Mission: To empower and strengthen marginalized communities by listening to the particular needs of women, youth and children. This is achieved by facilitating programs that focus on developing people through health education, skills training and personal development. In this way we hope to promote self reliance and Ubuntu.
Focus areas:
1. Community-based health education: Mamelani’s Wellness Program – empowering people to have the necessary knowledge to be able to take action regarding their health and the health of their families.
2. Youth Development: Project Lungisela – Independent Living skills for youth leaving alternative care (children’s homes and foster care).
3. Child and Family Support: Nonoza Education Fund – supporting vulnerable children and their families
