The Lusito Association for the mentally and physically challenged was established in 1979, by a group of Portuguese parents, under the auspices of the Mental Health Society of the Witwatersrand. Lusito has subsequently grown from a small day care, to a fully-fledged specialised school for the mentally and physically challenged that it is today.
The school offers assistance to learners and parents from the following professionals: speech therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, educational psychologist and biokineticist.
Lusito offers invaluable support to the parents of our learners through consultation and guidance. Parents are regularly kept up to date with their child’s progress. The school assesses each learner’s individual needs and referrals to the other institutions are occasionally given.
Presently the school has children with Cerebral Palsy (at birth and after birth), Down syndrome, and other syndromes, learning disabilities (behavioural and perceptual) and Traumatic Brain Injury (near drowning and accidents).
