 | FOCUS AREA: “It takes all to raise a child” African proverb. This proverb best describes the problem we address as an organisation. The issues facing our children and young people demand that we all be part of the problem.
Life Centre deals with the following issues which affect our children and young people:
a) HIV/AIDS awareness – this is addressed from a proactive position providing life skills programmes, which deals with the vital issues children and young people face.
b) Leadership development – one is never too young to become a leader. Our leadership programmes entail youth taking care of their own issues. We use such leaders for programmes we run and over time we have created a team of leaders whom we use in peer education programmes, camps for children and young people
c) Peer education programmes in schools – adolescent is a difficult stage and the nature of adolescent problems is continuous in schools and communities. This means the peer education programme need to be always running to address the issues.
d) Learnerships – This is a new venture we embarked on and it entails putting recent matrics into a school as a peer educator. The programme runs as a kind of learnership programme, which is being developed.
e) Camps - Many children cannot afford a holiday due to poverty. Our camps ministry take children for a fun filled holiday at local camps. Here we build character under an activity-based programme. Counselling is offered at camps in order to help children deal with issues and problems in their lives. Serious problems are referred to specialists. Recently we ran a high school camp and I managed to speak to a girl who seemed to be going through a difficult stage. It happened that her mother passed away and her step father does not regard her as his responsible. Our job now is to meet the stepfather and encourage him on the joy of bringing up some one who looks up to you. We hope we will manage to bring love into the life of the girl. Whatever it takes to make a difference in a young person’s life, we will do it.
f) Voluntary Counselling and Testing for HIV – We run a community programme based on VCT. Our position is that after 20 years its time to encourage our people to test for the HI virus and so that if one is infected by the virus one can derive benefits of early knowing of one’s HIV status. In 2004 we managed to test more than 1500 people.
Our vision: Equipping children and young people for abundant life.
WE NEED: A budget of R200 000 will allow us to run the different programmes for a whole year.
Vehicle – we need a minibus / kombi / 20 seater for transport, when running camps and for the peer education programmes.
Clothing for children aged up to 16 years is most welcome as at times we run programmes in poor communities where one would rather clothe the child before one can make sense to all in that community.
