Lambano Sanctuary is a NPO and has been operating since 2001. The aim of Lambano Sanctuary is to accept into our care, children who have been abandoned or orphaned, especially HIV / AIDS infected / affected children. We provide these children with a caring Christian environment whereby they are nurtured and cared for, physically, emotionally and spiritually with unconditional love.

To date we have assisted 206 children and we have 29 permanent residents who are HIV positive and who live in four separate homes. It is the aim of Lambano Sanctuary to try to provide a homely environment for the children, so we house seven to eight children with one mother per house. These permanent children are mostly on Anti-retroviral drugs and are in good health due to good nutrition and medical care as well as a loving environment. Without these, the children would not have survived.

We opened a 12 bed Hospice / Step Down Facility on 1 July 2009 and to date have admitted 46 patients. The Hospice takes in HIV / AIDS children for palliative care (care of the dying) as well as taking in children as a step down facility from Hospital. Lambano undertakes to take care of the dying child in a very loving, caring Christian environment as they have been doing in the Lambano Home, where the child will be allowed to die with dignity and be managed properly with the appropriate medication to ensure a pain free death.

The aim of the Hospice as a step down facility is to try and keep the children within the community with their families. Should their health improve with the good nutrition and medication provided, they will then be sent back to their families after the families have been trained on how to look after the sick child. A home-based care giver will visit the home on a regular basis to ensure that the child remains well and that the family is coping with the situation. If the child is on Anti-retroviral drugs the caregiver will also monitor this to ensure compliancy.
