The project is situated in an African township where there are high levels of poverty, HIV / AIDS, unemployment and child abuse.
In 2003 the community centre was taken over from the Women for Peace organisation (at their request) who were running a sewing project and a small preschool as they could no longer afford to run it. Since then, the project has developed into a comprehensive community development program. The preschool has grown to accommodate 60 children from ages 1 to 6, who receive two nutritious meals per day. An after- school care facility for children aged 6 to 16 was started and has grown to 120 children, who receive a nutritious meal every day. The children then receive help with homework, reading lessons, music lessons, art lessons, computer lessons, gymnastics lessons as well as play therapy and counselling.
Networks with local schools have been developed and caregivers communicate issues about the children with the teachers.
The centre provides comprehensive HIV/AIDS education classes to about 30 adult community members per quarter and present educational drama presentations in local schools. Psychosocial services are provided by five social auxiliary workers, who provide counselling and AIDS support, as well as help community members with government grants, and applications for identification books, birth certificates etc.
There is a (HBC), Home Based Care, group that goes out to vulnerable homes and provides care, assistance and training. Food is distributed by way of 100 food parcels to these homes per month.
Good working relations have been developed with the local clinics and police services. The project also accommodates employment creation projects and provides enterprise development services and sources of funding to support those entrepreneurs.
The Methodist church also sponsors a full-time minister for the project to provide spiritual development, prayer and worship and pastoral care in the community.
