The Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) has been serving the greater Johannesburg area since 1902. We are a registered non-profit, public benefit, non-government organization.
In 2008, the Krugersdorp SPCA was incorporated into the Johannesburg SPCA due to lack of management capacity therefore creating financial difficulties. This therefore increased our service area from 700 square kilometres to approximately 1500 square kilometres.
The SPCA is linked directly to animal care in the eye of the public and it has come to our attention, as much as we are still firm believers in our cause, that prevention is better than cure.
The JSPCA has developed a programme called the Humane Education and Outreach programme that transfers the simple knowledge of prevention, which we know will ultimately lead to the benefit of the animals.
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Empathy, compassion and respect are traits that are finding themselves on the Endangered List. Every person and animal is entitled to safety and security. By creating an awareness of, and promoting the development of empathy and the necessity of having respect for all sentient beings, we can contribute towards making a difference.
Through our education and outreach programmes we have noticed a prevalence of a gangster culture in some of our service areas which has led to the total desensitization of the youth. In order to support their image and lifestyle, they have embraced inhumane cultures such as dog-fighting. That’s where humane education comes in.
We believe that cruelty can ultimately be reduced by educating the public on responsible pet ownership and by providing the primary veterinary care to the previously disadvantaged communities. We focus on sending out a consistent, stimulating and age-appropriate animal-welfare related message to our target audience.
OUTREACH
Johannesburg SPCA is currently involved in information transfer and community empowerment programmes related to Primary Animal Health Care in resource poor areas on an ongoing basis.
The objective is not only to ensure the physical wellbeing of the animals, but also to promote an awareness of the need for good husbandry. This includes an intensive outreach sterilisation project.
Animals from various areas are vaccinated, dewormed, dipped and collected for sterilization. The JSPCA mobile clinic will allow us to increase the number of animals we are able to assist.
VETERINARY HOSPITAL
The JSPCA Veterinary hospital provides subsidised veterinary treatment for animals whose owners cannot afford the service of a private veterinarian. Animals that are treated are from all areas in the Greater Johannesburg and beyond. We however only recover a fraction of the operating costs of the JSPCA hospital from service charges.
FUNDING
The JSPCA does not receive government funding, and we rely completely on the generosity of corporate companies and members of the public to ensure that our much needed services can be continued in the future. Donations are tax deductible and a tax certificate can be issued for inclusion in tax returns.
