With the current growing number of destitute children and their subsequent vulnerability to abuse and other forms of exploitation, the Community of Tembisa could not just stand by and hope that some day these children will have some form of support, care and protection coming their way without any initiative from the community itself.
Based on the above, the community of Tembisa took a decisive step to explore means and ways of creating a structure that could be the voice of these children in gathering support that would ensure that their well being (shelter, education, food, clothing and overall integration into society) is taken care of.
Consultation with the relevant and existing government structures within the community (Social Welfare, South African Police Services, NGOs, and local businesses) gave birth to an ‘INKATEKO PROJECT’ that would mediate with various stakeholders in search of support that would give these children an opportunity to positively contribute to the economic growth of this country.
The organizations main objectives include:
- Link the children to their biological families so that their support could be based on a family environment.
- Liaise with Social Welfare for their guidance on expert matters.
- Provide counselling to destitute children.
- Report cases such as abuse and negligence of children to the relevant authorities.
- Promote peace and safety amongst children.
- Identify partners for fund-raising and support to the initiative.
- Above all, making sure that the growth of an African child is on the right path.
‘Getting involved in anyway possible with the kids’ is our mission. With the help of Social Welfare, South African Police Services (SAPS), Non Governmental Organization (NGOs) and other local businesses we are creating a platform for the better environment for children. We offer services such as: shelter, food, education, clothing and health care.
