Ikholwa Childrens Home

Ikholwa House was founded in January 2003 as an NPO and PBO as well as a Section 21 Company. Our aim is to give hope to children who have been infected or affected by the AIDS pandemic.

Our first house was purchased in the suburb of Weltevreden Park, Johannesburg. Since then another house adjacent to this was purchased in July 2005, and a third house has subsequently also been purchased. We have during that time given shelter, love and security to approximately 80 children. Around 40 of those children have now been adopted into ‘forever families’. It gives us a great feeling of joy to know that these dear little children have been given a second chance with wonderful parents to live a normal life. We currently have 40 children in our care, ranging in age from 5 months to 12 years.

The children we admit are usually here because they have been orphaned abandoned or the mother of the child has opted for adoption for various reasons. Each child has a different story but one thread links them, all they are in need of care, they need to be protected and loved, cherished and valued.

We have links with the Department of Social Development, Child Welfare, and several other NGO’s. These organizations regularly place children with us as good working relationships and trust has been established over the years. We have full clearance from the Johannesburg Department of Health having complied with all their standards.

Ikholwa has three directors and employs twelve experienced Child Care Workers, three domestics, a nursery school teacher, a social worker, 2 house parents, medical advisor and an administrator.

We have set up our own nursery school where the children from ages 2 to 5 are taught by a qualified nursery school teacher. Our Grade 0 children are schooled at an outside pre-school, 11 of our children attend the local primary school and 6 of our bigger children attend Sparrows Foundation School.

Services are also offered by several other professionals including a paediatrician, physio, GP and a psychologist, so we have wonderful support from the local community who have seen the quality of the work we do and are therefore willing to offer their assistance.

The houses are run purely on donations from the community and we are also supported by Liberty Church.

Ikholwa is the Zulu word for Believer and we truly believe that we are extending Hope to the children of South Africa who so desperately need our help.
