image placeholder FOCUS AREA:
Palliative Home Based Care. Traditionally our hospice cared for terminal cancer patients until the onslaught of the Aids pandemic hit our community. We cared for 411 patients during 2004, 174 of these were Aids patients. 98% of our patients come from the poverty stricken disadvantaged community. They do not have access to private care and the nearest hospital is 60kms away.

Davida Children's Hospice: In January 2002 the centre was opened for HIV/Aids infected, affected and vulnerable children and children at risk. We started with 8 children, between 3 and 7 years old, who were already patients. By the end of 2002 there were 21 children at the day-care centre. Today there are 66 children on the register, 46 children between 2 months and 3 years, 23 children between 4 and 6 years. The majority of these children live with extended families that do not have the means to care for these children. Hospice aims to provide a safe, stimulating environment, where medical, nutritional and development needs are met and monitored on a daily basis. Home Based Visits are an integral part of the care provided to these children.

Information, Education and Communication: In 1996, VJK Hospice implemented an active HIV/Aids Counselling, Awareness, Education and Destigmatization programme to our community. The outreach programme is carried out at schools, churches, farms, organizations, clinics and businesses.

WE NEED:
There is a need for a vehicle for home visits by the nurse to see patients and the social worker to do home assessments.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
On 29 September 2007 a Hobo dance will be held. Contact Maggie for details.
