We are an organisation operating on the Cape Flats region in the Western Cape known as the Hands of Honour. Our mission is to engage with organisations and communities to combat life threatening conditions including HIV / AIDS, Tuberculosis and social ills such as extreme poverty, unemployment, crime and general attitudes hopelessness and despair.
Our objectives, aims and visions are as follows:
(1) To restore honour, dignity and self-worth to young and adult men, their wives and children who have been adversely affected by the past injustices and present economic downturn together with its prevailing social ills like domestic abuse, unemployment, crime, poverty and substance abuse.
(2) The organisation aims to address this very pressing malaise by inducing in these men a fundamental change in the way they think of themselves and a profound shift in their attitudes towards work, self-worth, personal and social responsibility.
(3) The organisation aims to engage with government, business, foundations, trusts, individual and donor organisations, both local and international, and likeminded organisations to initiate and sustain various income generating projects which would ultimately lead to a better quality of life to the various communities we serve.
We are currently working with over forty young and adult men who are part of our SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME. We have overcome many obstacles to achieve a measure of success in our programmes and initiatives such as:
1. The successful rehabilitation of over 20 men who were caught in the suffocating grip of alcohol and drug abuse and have a further 20 to 30 others who are taking part in our programme.
2. A signed statement by the local police station commander verifying and endorsing our organisations role in bringing about a significant decrease in the amount of contact crimes and property crimes in the Steenberg area.
3. Our organisation was handpicked as finalist in the social enterprise business competition run by the Department of Economic Development as recognition for the role we are playing in providing a conducive and stable environment where our the aforementioned individuals can undergo skills training and partake in various self-help projects.
4. We are also currently successfully running our very own violence prevention through urban upgrading programme whereby we showcase our various skills in enhancing and beautifying neglected public open spaces and neglected buildings. This as well as the repairing and enhancing of the dwellings of child-headed families, widows and those living in abject poverty are done on a voluntarily basis by us at no charge to those concerned.
We are currently desperately in search of individuals, organisations, corporate business who have social responsibility outreach endeavours who could help us in our quest to register our social enterprise as a legal entity. We also need legal and financial assistance in obtaining the various licences and permits without which we cannot operate successfully.
Any gardening, painting and construction tools and equipment will be of great help in the operation of our social enterprise.
