Pilot Study: Kwa-Ford Public Primary School, Port Elizabeth

Freewalker has been focusing its effort towards improving the lives of the children at Kwa-Ford Primary School in New Brighton, with great hopes to eventually touch many of the Schools in the Port Elizabeth area. New Brighton is the oldest Township of Port Elizabeth, established in 1903 and the poorest, with an unemployment rate of around 80%. There are 320 children in the school, ranging from Grade R (4 to 5 yrs old) to Grade 7 (11 to 13 yrs old) and 12 teachers. The children are from under-resourced families or orphans in the surrounding, poverty stricken area. The school is trying to educate the children in the best possible way, using the limited resources available, with minimal funds. Previously the conditions of the school were so horrendous, the principle left with no hope in sight for the school. Today, we have the privilege of working with Miss Tinta, the principle, who is proactive in her efforts and takes the initiative to maintain all projects that Freewalker puts forth.

Improving Resources: Freewalker, with the help of sponsors and international volunteers, recently built the school’s first library and received many wonderful donated books. We also built an International Culture & Media Room. Our volunteers use this room to educate the children on their different countries and cultures around the world. The volunteers also assist in all classes they feel comfortable teaching. This type of experience at a young age opens up a world of possibilities for the children.

Improving Nutrition: The children rely on the food provided by the school, most often their only meal of the day. Freewalker has been assisting in developing and sustaining a garden for the school in hopes to educate the children on gardening skills and to feed the children throughout the week. This is an excellent source of nutrition for the students and efforts to expand this program are in the works.

Going Green: Freewalker is passionate about helping schools to become Eco-Friendly. We have registered Kwa-Ford Primary in the WESSA WWF Eco-Schools Program. This program was developed as a school improvement program that aims at achieving sustainable environmental management. The program is designed to encourage whole school learning and action for a healthy environment. Recently, a recycling program was put in place and the money from the recycling will go back into the school development. We have helped in starting a garden to feed the children and working on a rainwater collection and irrigation system and worm farm. Freewalker has also implemented a monthly clean up around the school that all learners partake in.

Through the Freewalker Foundation and sponsors, we can develop a sustainable path for the next generation of South Africans to a brighter and more prosperous future, rich in education and the power of an open mind.
