Free State Residential Care Centre

Free State Residential Care Centre was founded in 1981 to address the needs of disabled children leaving school after reaching the age of 18. Our mission is to create a save living- and working environment where intellectually challenged adults can make a meaningful contribution to society.

Few people stop and wonder what happens to intellectually challenged children. The fact of the matter is that they become intellectually challenged adults with specific needs and also specific challenges.

Many of the disabled lose their parents at a relatively early stage and the reality is that the next of kin isn’t always keen to look after them and specific care needs to be provided. It is also a fact that intellectually challenged persons don’t have proper opportunities to socialise with peer groups and to start relationships. Many of them neglect their health because there is nobody to take care of them or to transport them to proper services. One can’t even start to imagine about the many ways an intellectually challenged person can be exploited by ruthless persons. In these harsh economic times it is impossible for an intellectually challenged person to get a proper job. Al these factors have a negative impact on the disabled person.

Free State Residential Care Centre addresses all these problems.

The Centre provides residential care to 156 intellectually challenged adults who are in need of constant care. This service also includes a Clinic Service to provide daily basic medical care. The Clinic also helps with the implementation of chronic medicines and makes transport available to hospitals and other specialised services.

Work is therapy and makes one feels good about yourself. The Centre manages 5 protected workshops (bakery, woodwork / toys, textile, pottery and printing) where the 156 residents are trained on a daily basis. They are also joined by 38 disabled dayworkers who are transported in a bus also provided by the Centre.

The centre is in need of support to deliver all the services needed e.g. food, raw material for workshops, fuel, maintenance, transport, etc. We deliver a service that can’t be delivered by government and the service is also to the benefit of the community. It gives parents the peace of mind that care is been taken of their children.

Free State Residential Care Centre will be 30 years old in 2011 and will continue to deliver their services to the community and to the disabled for years to come.
