VIER PFOTEN (FOUR PAWS) was founded 23 years ago in March 1988 in Vienna. Since then the organisation has gone from strength to strength in Europe. VIER PFOTEN currently has 10 country offices, sanctuaries and parks and runs campaigns to effect change for animals at the political level.
FOUR PAWS South Africa was established in December 2006 and it is a registered NPO and PBO. In the first two years it focused on establishment of Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary which is situated 18 kilometres outside Bethlehem on the road to Warden. The organisation is spreading its wings with the view to becoming one of the best well known Animal Welfare Organizations in South Africa. We currently operate in Eastern Free State.
The organization has been offering the following services for the past 4 years:
1. Sanctuary: Provision of lifelong care and natural habitat (Lionsrock) to big cats that have been subjected to a life of cruel and abusive captivity.
2. Educational Programme: Educating on responsible animal care and instilling the information to communities about showing more humanity towards animals.
3. Mobile Animal Clinic: Providing a mobile animal clinic to the rural communities that do not have the access to veterinary care for their pets.
4. Emergency Relief Missions: 81 fallow deer rescued from being killed on Robben Island as well as9 elephants rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the wild in Zimbabwe.
