EDUCATION AND PREVENTION:
These programmes are carried out in response to the needs expressed by the communities concerned. Every programme has an HIV/Aids education component.
Life Skills Education. Programmes provide training for primary and high school children as well as out of school youth. The structured programmes aim at heightening self-awareness, building self-esteem, providing knowledge and information about sex and sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases (HIV/Aids), and relationship dynamics. Programs help children to become aware of abuse and violence, and assist them in dealing with bullying. Communication, conflict resolution and problem solving skills are enhanced through this programme. Older pupils are trained in study skills, goal setting, time management, healthy life styles, stress-management and peer pressure.
Homework/After Care Centers and Holiday Programmes. The programmes aim to provide constructive, creative activities for children and assist them to develop skills in order to improve school performance. The programmes provide an alternative to the streets. The successful “Rising Star” programme in Westbury culminated in a talent show with over 80 contestants and was attended by 700 people.
Holiday programmes continue to be in demand and provide recreational and educational activities for the children.
Violence and Gender Issue Awareness Programme. South Africa is experiencing a vast increase in rape, abuse, bullying and violence in the school environment. Gender sensitivity programmes are aimed at reducing the incidence of rape and abuse. Gender violence includes:
- Sexual harassment and abuse
- Bullying, intimidation and threats
- Verbal abuse, taunts and insults
- Physical violence and assault, including corporal punishment and other physical punishments.
- Emotional abuse (e.g. tempting someone into a sexual relationship under false pretences such as promises of marriage).
- Psychological abuse (e.g. threatening to beat a pupil or to fail them in an exam).
Child Abuse Programmes. The programme aims to give pupils information on their rights, the dynamics of abuse and to link them with relevant support systems and resources.
Violence and Crime Prevention Programmes. These programmes are run with children, students and adults in schools and communities. The programmes aim to increase an awareness and understanding of violence and crime, develop skills to deal with conflict and problem solving and to offer alternatives to crime and violence. Gender sensitivity programmes are aimed at reducing the incidence of rape and abuse.
Peer Counselling Training (Youth Community Developers - YCD’s). This programme provides boys and girls, mainly from Grade 10, with skills to become peer counselors. They are trained in mediation, counselling, conflict resolution and community development skills. The aim of this programme is self-development. It helps learners develop useful life skills and habits, and builds their self-confidence and community spirit, helping them to become responsible adults who will eventually give back to their own communities. In turn, these YCD’s work to pass these skills on to their peers. The YCD’s offer holiday programs, Buddy Programs and counselling services to their peers. They organize awareness campaigns on vital issues such as drug, alcohol abuse and HIV/Aids. They fundraise for local organisations, i.e. old age homes and children’s homes. They open soup kitchens, and adopt schools. This service is supervised by trained social workers who will continue working with these YCD’s until matric. These activities enable the YCD’s to enrich their CV’s when applying for tertiary education and jobs.
Training Courses: FLC also provides training courses to teachers helping them to identify problems and work with behavioural modification. The trainers provide the parents of the pupils they work with, additional training at the schools with Parenting Skills Workshops.
