Vision: ‘No one should have to live on our streets’. Mission: ‘To get the homeless to a home’. Method: To make available temporary shelter.
Rehabilitation opportunities, social welfare services, family reunification services, physical care and support to adult people living on the streets who are committed to reintegration.
To partner and co operate with religious institutions, organisations, welfare bodies, service providers, businesses, government departments, local authorities and individuals concerned with the care and welfare of the destitute. To promote community awareness of the social problems arising out of destitution and to encourage the participation of the public in the alleviation of such problems. To reduce the opportunities for people to continue to live on the streets
Since registration as a NPO on 29 March 2010, we have successfully placed six destitute people into permanent housing. We would like to give food, clothing and other essentials to approximately 89 people on a regular basis. We created six permanent job opportunities to the destitute.
Planned objectives set at the beginning of the past year (the measurable activities you planned to achieve):
- Establishing relationships with the destitute.
- Obtaining land to be developed as a homeless shelter and emergency shelter for abused and battered women and their children.
- Raising funds.
- Establishing relationships with role-players in the community.
- Creating public awareness in regards to the homeless crisis.
- Providing food and clothing to the homeless.
- Establishing a food garden.
- Holistic Rehabilitation of the Destitute
- TB and HIV / AIDS Counselling
Objectives listed we achieved or partly achieved.
- We have good relationships with the destitute.
- We obtained land and started to develop it.
- We managed to raise some funds but it is not adequate.
- Establishing relationships with local community is also in a forming stage.
- We have created some public awareness regarding the homeless crisis.
- We provide clothing, shoes, blankets and mattresses.
- We are currently busy establishing a food garden. It is a work in progress. By providing counsel, work and upliftment opportunities we started the process. We still want to assist our customers in obtaining their IDs, due medical services and where needed psychiatric treatment. Once they started earning an income, we will train them on how to budget and open a bank account.
- We have a trained counsellor that provides a service. We also link with Hospice and other local community centres to assist us with counselling.
How we achieved, or partly achieved, the Objectives indicated.
We have gone out into the streets and surrounding areas to the places where the destitute sleeps and we assessed the situations on individual basis. We have regular contact with the destitute and try to address some of the problems they face.
A local business man donated a piece of property suitable for a shelter. We still need to renovate the building and to erect housing facilities to accommodate at least 30 people.
We are in the process of developing a fundraising strategy. By using the local media, we are creating public awareness in regards to the activities of the organisation. We also made posters which are on display at local businesses.
The directorate serves on several local community forums and commissions and use this as a platform to create awareness on how to prevent homelessness and what to do if it does occur within the community.
Through kind of a local community, we are able to provide in the basic needs of the destitute in the community. With the support of several local instances, we were enabled to plant vegetables for the food garden.
Because we are in the starting stages we do not yet fulfil all our aims in the holistic care program but will be able to do so as soon as adequate funding is available. We try not to reinvent the wheel and work together with other role-players in joining their prevention and awareness programs.
