The Christian Social Council North (CSCN) is a non-profit organisation, established in 1936, that consists of a professional network of social workers. Our vision is TO GIVE HOPE to people in despair. Our mission is to be the organisation of choice; to unite with other role-players, and to implement social upliftment programs, transforming the needs of children and families, into HOPE. We deliver services to all people in need, irrespective of religion, race or gender.
The CSC North dynamically operates through 17 ‘Centres of Hope’, located in Gauteng, Limpopo and North West. We focus on giving people the opportunity to live life to their FULL potential through our team response to four (4) main needs in communities:
1. Family Preservation
2. Child Protection (including adoptions and foster care)
3. Poverty alleviation
4. HIV / AIDS programs
During 2009/10, 6093 families and more than 4592 children were reached by the CSC North system.
THE CHILD CENTRE (Child Protection Program): The services in this program have been ongoing for the past 10+ years. Services such as foster care, adoption and assessment and therapy are rendered by specially trained senior social workers, as these kind of services request specific expertise and knowledge.
Story of Hope:
My name is “Sophie” * and I am four years old. I am currently in foster care due to the fact that my mother and stepfather were unemployed. This lead to our apartment’s rent falling behind. The reason for my parents’ unemployment was their alcohol- and drug abuse. There was NO food in our house and my mother sometimes made a sugar and water mixture for me and my two sisters to drink.
We were constantly exposed to family violence and pornography. We were also sexually and physically abused by my stepfather. He locked my baby sister in a storeroom one night when she didn’t want to stop crying… Luckily my grandmother contacted the social worker from the Christian Social Council- and today all three of us are safe and happy.
We are in dire need of therapy as well as occupational therapy, due to the trauma we have been through. My foster parents can’t pay for all the therapy sessions, but they do love us a lot!! (*fictitious name used).
The Child Therapy Centre, in collaboration with the 17 Centres of Hope in the CSC North system, helps children like ‘Sophie’ through the following services, rendered by them:
- Protection of children by removing them from parental care in terms of the Children’s Act.
- Recruitment of places of safety to provide children with loving care pending the children’s court case.
- Assessment of family relationships and well being: assessment of children and adults are applied in a three hour assessment session.
- The placement of children in substitute care through the recruitment of foster parents and / or adoption parents.
- Training and support for substitute parents.
- Intensive therapy for the children involved, helping them to adapt to their circumstances.
Donations will be used for the assessment and therapy of abused, neglected and sexually molested children.
