Caring for Orphans in Rural Areas (CORA)

CORA is NPO focussed on early intervention for pre-school children in rural areas, by setting up early learning enrichment centres in the rural Eastern Cape.

The early pre-school years are critical for children’s’ development as it is a time for rapid physical, emotional and mental growth. The experiences and relationships in these years play a critical role in a child’s ability to grow up healthy, ready to learn and equipped to deal with adulthood.

Goals and Objectives of the organisation:

CORA envisions the creation of safe early-learning spaces and enrichment centres for orphaned and vulnerable children, thus equipping them to derive greater benefit once formal schooling commences. This is articulated in objectives to:

1. Identify and support child-headed households with pre-school-age members in rural areas, without further placing strain on already impoverished communities;
2. Satisfy a significant amount of their nutritional needs by providing 2 meals per day
3. Nurture, encourage, stimulate and teach children basic skills, thus preparing them better for entry-level schooling, including motor co-ordination, numeracy, literacy, and life skills.
4. To create methods of sustainability at the centres i.e.
- community involvement (maintenance, gardens, caregivers),
- individuals (and corporations) to ‘adopt’ a school or child,
- creating gardens to provide food on daily basis for centre,
- web-based funding.
