image placeholder FOCUS AREA:
People become disabled due to injury, illness or birth defects. Community violence generates disabilities. Persons who are physically disabled often have many social problems. Their levels of competence to address these problems vary on the basis of their individual capacity (including psychological, emotional and intellectual factors), social circumstances, the environment in which they live and other factors such as access to resources. The social environment (including the family unit) promotes or hinders their ability to enjoy quality of life.

Many persons with disability do not have social support to find appropriate solutions to the problems they experience. They are often disadvantaged in respect of opportunities for equality in the availability and accessibility of resources, financial means, transport, medical services, technical aids, physical care, education, recreation, cultural activities, employment and other aspects. People with physical disabilities in the Cape Peninsula need assistence to improve their quality of life. They often cannot afford to pay for available services.

Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled employs 28 staff members to provide social development services annually to ±1 500 persons of all ages with physical disabilities who live at home in the community with their families. We serve the Cape Peninsula in the area between Bloubergstrand, Simonstown, Khayelitsha and Bonteheuwel ie the whole Peninsula. We also utilize the services of many volunteers.

Services:

  • Social Development Services provided by Social Workers, Community Development Workers and an Occupational Therapist.

  • Encouragement and empowerment through counselling, group activities and community Programs.

  • Attention to basic needs including: Access to social grants and material assistance, wheelchairs, other assistive devices / appliances, transport, education.

  • Screening for employment options, including training. Access to a range of options for economic empowerment, including employment in the open labour market and elsewhere.

  • Access to sport, recreation and cultural activities.

  • Access to peer support, capacity building and resource networking.

  • Access to day care, relief care or home based care services.

  • Care of disabled people in their own homes in the communities of the Cape Peninsula.

  • Facilitation of care of disabled people away from their homes in appropriate care facilities.

  • Awareness raising about disabilities and Human Rights. Lobbying for changes that add quality to life.

  • Challenge to the limitations of disabling circumstances and to the negative public attitudes toward persons with disability.

WE NEED:
Money for staff salaries and to facilitate transport for disabled persons.
