Camphill Village, West Coast is a rural, residential, working farm community which offers support and work opportunities for people living with intellectual disabilities. We create work and home environments which are mutually therapeutic and culturally and spiritually fulfilling to all. We use all our resources – financial, social and environmental, in a manner that promotes sustainability. Through our income generating enterprises we strive to produce and provide products and services of quality that have a healing impact on the environment and the broader community. We are open to regular evaluation and are accountable in all aspects of life.
In response to the call from Government, Camphill Village West Coast, prioritised giving placements to disabled persons living in desperate situations. They now live in a safe home environment and enjoy new opportunities and live fulfilling and happy lives. Residents receive nutritious meals and have access to a variety of therapies, creative writing, speech and music, choir and painting, movement exercises and playing in Camphill’s marimba band, which performs at the market open day. They are provided with a rich cultural life where they are exposed to a variety of different cultures and cultural activities.
The residents are accommodated in 11 Group-homes with house leaders who see to their daily well-being. Income generating enterprises give residents the opportunity to learn a variety of skills and contribute in a meaningful way to living in Camphill Village. Each initiative contributes financially towards the running cost of Camphill Village.
Residents are also taught a variety of skills in the production of goods which are sold and they are thereby able to make a valuable contribution to the day-to-day running of the income generating enterprises giving them a sense of accomplishment, self worth, respect and dignity.
A nursing sister holds a clinic for residents twice a week when the well-being and health of residents are monitored, especially elderly frail residents and those living with HIV. A doctor visits once a month to make further recommendations for the ongoing care of residents.
Camphill Village, West Coast has an open Market day the first Sunday of the month, except January. At the Market we have outside stall holders selling a variety of crafts and other products, our Camphill Coffee Shop is open selling delicious cakes, vegetarian dishes, meat and salads. Our Bakery is open selling deliciously fresh breads, buns, rusks, biscuits and granola – all freshly prepared the same morning. The Cosmetics workshop is open selling lovely fragrant facial creams, herbal deodorants, bath oils and milks, essential oils, candles, medicinal herbal products and culinary herbal products. The Farm Shop sells a variety of crafts, produced in our therapeutic craft workshop, a variety of organic jams, preserves and juice, as well as our Dairy products – feta cheese, delicious yoghurt, butter (when available), cheese both plain and cumin cheese – the best on the West Coast! We also sell free-range eggs.
The Market open day is a wonderful opportunity to see the possibilities there are for a people with intellectual disabilities and special needs. They are able to produce quality products and play a vital role in the income generating enterprises.
