None of us are getting any younger by the day – old age is fact of life!
At The Boksburg Society for the Aged our mission as a registered Welfare Organization is to render various important services and activities to the Aged, irrespective of race and creed. We strive to obtain and maintain a high standard of care and where applicable to provide a safe and secure environment for the Aged of our community. We strive to cater to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs for all Aged emphasizing man’s right to dignity and respect.
At present, the Society manages the following:
COSMOS HOME: where we care for 225 physically frail aged. We have 24 hour nursing care rendered by Professional Nurses, a Social Worker, Ward Helpers, General Assistants, Administration Staff and Volunteers. Our Alzheimer’s Division offers highly specialized care to 31 residents. There are more than 50 Residents in Cosmos Home who do not have any relatives. They receive Government Grants of R1 080.00 per month. Although our monthly cost per Resident is much much higher, these people stay at Cosmos Home for only R1 080.00. There are no funds to buy clothing, toiletries, etc for them. We must provide same! Voluntary Workers run our library, tuck shop and book sales. They also read to the blind and teach residents handwork activities, painting, woodcraft, beadwork, etc.
STRELITZIA SERVICE CENTRE renders Community Services to all Aged persons still residing in the Community, with the aim of keeping them functioning independently in their homes as long as possible. The following services and activities are, amongst other offered at the Service Centre: Daily balanced meals, Clinic Services, Meals on Wheels (to people unable to attend the Service Centre as a result of illness), Library, Church Services, Carpet Bowls, Line Dancing and Bingo. Dancing, Trim Gym, organized walks and outings, organized tours, etc. We also assist the Boksburg Community with applications for Government Grants, etc and thereby saving them a trip to the Social welfare offices in Germiston. Strelitzia Service Centre also runs a project where they identify need in the Community and supply food and, where possible clothing, blankets, etc to the needy. Regular fundraising helps to keep this project on track.
DISA HOUSE: situated in Comet, offers low cost accommodation to 10 people, who receives their main meal from Strelitzia Service Centre where they also make use of the facilities of the Service Centre.
HOUSE EDELWEISS: situated opposite Cosmos Home in Vandykpark provides boarding and lodging for 8 people in the lower income group. These Residents make use of the facilities at Cosmos Home.
VOSLOORUS AND VILLA LISA OUTREACH PROJECTS: We assist the Aged in these areas by means of a feeding scheme. For the past 5 years we assist The Arc of Love Old Age Home in Vosloorus with the Welfare Registration process to become a registered home qualifying for subsidies. We also assist them with monthly donations of food, clothes, blankets, etc. to provide for their Aged.
