The Africa Consortium on Climate Change (ACCC) is an NGO founded and registered in South Africa and designed to work within the SADC region and the rest of Africa. ACCC is designed for the purpose of complimenting African Governments’ effort in combating the impacts of Climate Change that is affecting the region and the continent. It is aligned with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Union’s position on Climate Change.
ACCC seeks to compliment efforts of Governments, inter-governmental bodies, co-operating partners and civil society, including communities themselves in responding to the serious threat of climate change. On the African continent, it also stems from the recognition of the seriousness of the challenge posed by climate change, which was re-iterated by the African Heads of State and Government at the African Union Summit in January 2007. The Heads of State and Government called on all stakeholders – including governments, private sector actors, and civil society – to actively address climate change. These leaders highlighted the need to mainstream climate adaptation and mitigation into poverty reduction strategies and economic development plans.
To put this recommendation into practice, the African Union (AU), New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and SADC have committed to active participation in the negotiations concerning future commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the post Kyoto Protocol (i.e. post2012) climate regime. In response, several civil society initiatives have been born and this one seeks to focus on Africa’s rural with the view of igniting change right where it will matter the most and as such, ACCC’s mandate will focus, over the next five years, on Agriculture, Forests, Land-use and Livelihoods.
