 | FOCUS AREA:
Phenduka Literacy Project does "reading rescue" programmes with Grade 6 and 7 learners in primary schools in Alexandra. These programmes involve diagnostic tests to identify non-readers and weak readers (sometimes as many as one sixth of a class), as well as a back-to-basics programme to ensure these children learn to read and develop fluency. Without this intervention, they are unlikely to enter High School, or if they do, are likely to drop out within a year or two. Phenduka also runs teacher workshops to improve the literacy methodology that teachers use in Alexandra schools.
WE NEED:
Money donations to run our programmes. Typing paper for the workbooks and reading programmes we provide. Pencils, rulers, coloured card for flashcards and old National Geographic magazines for making our word-web posters to develop vocabulary.
